Although international efforts to stop the use of anti-personnel landmines have been extremely successful, it will still take many years to remove those placed before the ban was in effect. Landmines are hard to detect since most are buried underground or hidden by combatants. If maps are available, they only indicate the locations of minefields and not where each individual mine has been laid. These difficulties in detection are the main challenges for humanitarian demining efforts.
